THE SIX CORE COMPETENCIES OF SUCCESSFUL STORYTELLING SPECIAL SUNDAY WORKSHOP: Sunday, May 16, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Registration: $45 (save $10 when you register for this with the Full Conference Package).
A look at what successful authors of novels and screenplays know and newer writers struggle to discover and then understand. Getting published is more than having a great idea and writing gorgeous sentences. Successful stories, long and short, are built upon a foundation of solid story architecture, which is composed of six separate and equally essential elements and qualities, the lack of any one of which will cause the story to remain unpublished. This workshop defines and explores all six of these core competencies, using qualitative checklists and examples to ensure a comprehensive understanding of what makes a novel, screenplay, or short story publishable or not.
Larry Brooks is a novelist, screenwriter, and writing instructor. He has published six critically-acclaimed thrillers, one of which was a USA Today bestseller and another named to Publishers Weekly "Best Books of 2004" list after a starred review. In addition to leading writing workshops, he runs an instructional writing website, www.storyfix.com. His novels include: Whisper of the Seventh Thunder (Sons of Liberty Press, January 2010); Schmitt Happens (serialized, Amazon.com/shorts); Bait and Switch (Signet, 2004); Serpent's Dance (Signet 2002); Pressure Points (Onyx 2001); Darkness Bound (Onyx 2000); and Larry's nonfiction work, Story Structure - Demystified (ebook, www.storyfix.com); and 101 Slightly Unpredictable Tips (ebook, www.storyfix.com)
