PITCH YOUR PROJECT

This year, we offer individual pitching appointments with both an agent and an editor. Appointments are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. PLEASE NOTE: Appointments with agent Sally Harding are currently full. Appointments are still available with editor Adrian Liang.

The following are the specific interests of our guest editor and agent:

•  Nonfiction excluding memoir, unless the memoir involves a professional relationship with a celebrity, such as author being a rock band's personal photographer.

 

Agent Sally Harding, Cooke Literary Agency - CURRENTLY FULL

•  While specializing in fiction, Ms. Harding is also interested in nonfiction. She is open to all genres.

APPOINTMENT GUIDELINES

1. Please arrive five minutes early and check in with the monitor at the agent/editor rooms.

2. The appointments are for ten minutes. Introduce yourself and be prepared to move quickly into a short verbal description of your manuscript.

With fiction, do not attempt to give a plot summary. An example of a pitch might be: “My historical novel is the story of a high-spirited southern belle whose privileged life crashes down upon her as the civil war breaks out, forcing her to learn new strengths in love, war and the radically altered South.” (It doesn’t need to be one sentence, but develop something no longer than 4-5 lines.)

3. Unless you have very specialized knowledge, don’t mention your background. (You could say, “I’m a doctor, and my medical thriller . . .”)

4. The agent or editor may not be interested in the manuscript, but may have some ideas for where you could market it.

5. Do not bring any printed materials with you, or leave anything with the agent or editor. She will ask you to mail a full or partial manuscript, if interested in seeing more.


HOW TO SIGN UP:

Appointments fill up quickly, and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

When you register for the conference you will be given the option on the registration page to request an appointment with either agent Sally Harding or editor Adrian Liang. If an appointment is available, the WOTR agent/editor coordinator will contact you with the precise time of your appointment. (You may have to step quietly in and out of a workshop.)
